September 2022 Provider Spotlight

When Dr. Joe Kvedar, dermatologist and long-time telehealth champion, first heard about telehealth in 1992, there was no way for him to imagine he would be driving innovation, creating the market, and gaining acceptance for connected health for nearly three decades. In the 1990’s, to take high quality pictures for use in dermatology, it cost more than $12,000 just to purchase the right camera to use with telehealth. That same picture is now taken with a patient’s smart phone in a matter of seconds. The Wyoming Telehealth Network caught up with Dr. Kvedar, the immediate Past Chair of the Board of the American Telemedicine Association (ATA), to talk about the organization’s second annual Telehealth Awareness Week and his own experiences with the ever-changing medical field.
Being ahead of the curve is nothing new for Dr. Kvedar. He has been innovating in the field of telehealth since 1994 at Massachusetts General Hospital where he formed a committee to begin understanding how telehealth could be used to decrease barriers to healthcare. This led to his overseeing the program that became a best practice model for providers throughout the globe.

June 2022 Provider Spotlight

Dr. Freedman
Dr. Andrew Freedman

Dr. Andrew R. Freedman is a pulmonary/sleep medicine/critical care physician base in central New Jersey who has been in private practice since 1985.

I first learned about telehealth in 2012 when I was investigating other options to change the direction of my professional activities. I had come to a point of dissatisfaction with traditional practice that involved running back and forth between the hospital and the office. I had literally trolled the internet looking for ICU coverage jobs when I accidentally fell into something called telemedicine.

The COVID pandemic changed the world of healthcare. Overnight my office-based practice, which I had downsized though never totally given up, transitioned into a telemedicine practice. Today I see patients live one afternoon a week and the remainder of the time I see them as telemedicine visits. Since geography is no longer a boundary, I now consult on patients around the United States. Presently I am licensed in 24 states doing telemedicine pulmonary/sleep medicine consults, remotely reading sleep studies, and remotely covering intensive care units. It is an exciting time for me, vicariously traveling around the country, meeting new people, doing all aspects of my specialty in different venues.

The Aging Division has been actively engaging older adults throughout the pandemic with their drive on technology and virtual socialization activities. They have found their efforts successful and welcomed by older adults.

The connection with Telehealth is that the more devices in the hands of older adults, the more older adults will become comfortable with low-risk activities via socialization in virtual senior centers. This leads to the potentiality that they will be more likely to apply this technology to telehealth. It is a transition period, and requires patience and dedicated support.
