2024 Award Recipient: Dr. David Nickerson
The 2024 Excellence in Telehealth Award recipient is presented to Dr. David Nickerson, who is a physician and medical director at Sheridan Memorial Hospital in Sheridan, WY. Dr. Nickerson has accomplished outstanding work in the field of telehealth, including leading the implementation of telehealth at Sheridan Memorial Hospital’s Urgent Care by setting up videoconferencing technology in patient rooms and expanding telemedicine video visits for all types of medical problems. “In each of these endeavors, Dr. Nickerson has shown leadership and advocacy in overcoming barriers to access in telehealth in the Sheridan community.” – Angela Erickson, Outpatient Services Manager.
Dr. David Nickerson was born and raised in Bighorn, Wyoming. Growing up, he balanced his academic and outdoor interests with a passion for problem-solving competitions, which greatly influenced his development. He earned a Bachelor of Arts with a minor in Spanish Literature from Carleton College in 2002. Initially pursuing graduate studies in geology, he later shifted his focus to medicine.
In 2010, Dr. Nickerson graduated with an M.D. from the University of Washington and completed his residency in emergency medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock. After his training, he returned to his hometown of Sheridan, Wyoming, and began working as an ER physician at Sheridan Memorial Hospital, later also serving in the hospital’s urgent care clinic when it opened in 2013.
Following six years of full-time work in the emergency department, Dr. Nickerson transitioned to urgent care, where he became the physician medical director and led the clinic’s expansion to a new location. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he identified opportunities to improve healthcare delivery through telemedicine, enhancing accessibility, preserving personal protective equipment, and minimizing staff infectious exposures. This led to an interest telehealth and the implementation of telemedicine in his clinic.
